Soprano Josephine Shaw is a rising star on the classical scene, recognised for her cross-genre versatility and passion for bringing classical music to new audiences internationally.
From France, to Italy, to Dubai, Josephine’s performing has taken her across the world on tours and young artist programmes working with leading artists in the classical industry such as Véronique Gens, Barbara Hannigan and Dame Sarah Connolly. Starting out as a busker on the streets of London, her training led her to the Royal College of Music, at which she is in her final year as a Frederick and Phyllis Treby Scholar. Performances at the College have included international tours with the RCM Baroque Orchestra, singing with the RCM Jazz Orchestra, performing in Janacek’s opera ‘The Cunning Little Vixen’, and most recently, Josephine has sung the role of Galatea in Handel’s ‘Acis and Galatea’. Maneuvering deftly between opera and musical theatre, last summer she starred as Julie Jordan in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Carousel’ with the National Youth Music Theatre, with a performance commended for its ‘astounding maturity and heartbreaking pathos’.
Josephine brings her love for storytelling and performance across mediums, to the world of social media. Her content on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube gives audiences an inside look into training and performing as a classical singer at one of the world’s leading music conservatoires, and her passion for sparking a new generation’s interest in classical music and concerts has led to multiple online collaborations with organisations like Decca Records, Aurora Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. She has also featured on BBC Click and BBC Radio London discussing her experiences as a classical artist in today’s world.
